Second edition, partly original. Copies of the first edition, published in 1810, were seized and completely destroyed by order of Napoleon, who considered the work hostile to France. "In the absence of the Paris edition of 1813, of which only five copies remain, this London edition of 1813 is the "true" original edition, because in 1814 Nicolle's second French edition, with insignificant spelling corrections, will only reproduce the entire text of the 1813 edition and not that of the edition printed in 1810" (Schazmann). Unpublished preface in which Madame de Staël recounts the circumstances of her banishment. A very fine copy in elegant bindings in perfect condition.
