Second edition of this important work on Dutch Guiana, originally published in 1796.
The illustration consists of 2 engraved titles and 81 plates based on the author's drawings, including 3 maps and a fold-out view. 16 of these plates were engraved by William Blake.
Captain Stedman was sent to Surinam to fight rebellious slaves and stayed there for more than four years. His work is a meticulous description of the life of the slave-owning planters of the 18th century.
