Lot no. 211
STENDHAL Henry Beyle, dit. De l'Amour. Paris, P. Mongie, 1822; 2 vol. in-12 of [4]-iv-232 pp. ; [4]-328-[3] pp. in red Russian leather, boards decorated with bold and light gilt fillets, the central fillet interrupted by six filigree fleurons, spines decorated with gilt motifs, gilt edges (Marius Magnin). First edition, 150 copies published by the author. "Its success was slim; in twenty years it had only a hundred readers, and from 1822 to 1833, only seventeen buyers. It is sacred," said the bookseller Mongie, "because nobody touches it! (...) When I had one, the only one that existed, and I spoke to him about it, he claimed that the whole edition had been put on board a ship to serve as ballast, the bookseller being too happy to get rid of a work that had been cluttering up his shops for five years without selling a copy" (Adolphe Paupe). Suffice to say that this title is extremely rare. Delightful bindings signed by Magnin, an excellent craftsman from Lyon. He has attached to the volumes the covers of the resale by Bohaire in 1833. The title-pieces of the spines of the first cover dated 1822 have been bound in at the end - Ex-libris Raoul Baguenault de Puchesse. Cordier, 30; A. Paupe, Histoire des œuvres de Stendhal, p. 32.
