Lot no. 64
STENDHAL. Autograph letter signed by the pseudonym Petit to Vincenzo Salvagnoli. [Florence, summer 1831]. 2 pages in-12 and a half, address on verso, red wax seal. Stendhal describes his visit to the Medici Villa at Poggio a Caiano.
I saw the gardens at Poggio a Cajano, which seemed very flat to me. Judge for yourself. In the mountainous part, at 9 o'clock in the morning, we were never able to find any real, deep, cool shade. In the lower part, the water is dirty and sickening. There are 800 gardens like this in England. Few have the good fortune to have found big, small trees, and none are so ugly. My friends have not bothered to see the house. I shall be at Vigne's at 4 o'clock. I shall be happier to see you than you can imagine. I am attached to your all-French spirit.
Creases, angular paper missing.
