Lot no. 59
[STENDHAL]. VENERONI. Maître italien, ou Grammaire françoise et italienne, contenant tout ce qui est nécessaire pour apprendre facilement la langue italienne. New edition, put in better order, entirely recast... by C.-M. Gattel. Lyon, Bruyset aîné, 1803. In-8, shagreened basane, smooth ornate spine, daffodil edges, slipcase (period binding). Stendhal's Italian grammar. "Jean Vigneron, known as Veneroni (1642-1708), was the author of a grammar widely used at the time, Le Maître italien ou grammaire française et italienne. Abbé Gattel, Stendhal's former teacher at the Ecole Centrale in Grenoble, had just published a new edition in Avignon in 1800. A copy of the Lyon reprint, year XI-1803, once existed in the library of Louis Crozet" (Victor del Litto). Precious volume with three autograph notes by Stendhal which testify to his early passion for Italy: 1811, 14 février gli Italiani non hanno una cosi grande vanità (Italians do not have such great vanity) on the first flyleaf; and on the false title: Si j'étais fortuné (the ink has smudged a little), then: L'Italien, la langue est belle (Italian, the language is beautiful). The copy comes from the library of Louis Crozet, with his signature on the title, followed by the words Bac. [baccalaureus]. A youthful friend of Henri Beyle, Louis Crozet (1784-1858) "was also his adviser, almost his collaborator in his early literary endeavours" (Royer). In particular, he helped him publish Histoire de la peinture en Italie. When Stendhal died, he inherited his manuscripts, which he donated to the Grenoble municipal library. He was president of the Isère General Council from 1848 to 1852 and mayor of Grenoble from 1853 to 1858. Label of the bookseller Théophile Barrois on the flyleaf. Copy in excellent condition preserved in a modern slipcase signed Boichot. L. Royer, Les Livres de Stendhal dans la bibliothèque de son ami Crozet, Giraud-Badin, 1923, n°7 - Victor del Litto: Stendhal, Œuvres intimes, La Pléiade, I, 1138 - id., Les Bibliothèques de Stendhal, Paris, Champion, 2001, p. 205.
