STERN (Marie d'Agoult, pseud. Daniel). Moral sketches. Thoughts, reflections and maxims. Paris, J. Techener, 1859. In-12, fawn half-calf with corners, gilt coat of arms in the centre of the first plate, spine decorated, gilt head (contemporary binding). Third revised and enlarged edition. A copy bearing the arms of Charles de Mandre (1887, no. 75), later passed to the library of Ph.-L. de Bordes de Fortage, with ex-libris. The engraved portrait is missing, but a photographic portrait by Étienne Carjat and a fable in verse, La Carpe et le lapin, bound at the end of the volume, have been added. Covers and corners worn, spine rubbed, foxing. Attached is a second copy, paperback, complete with the engraved portrait by Léopold Flameng; some foxing, spine browned. Also enclosed is an autograph letter signed by Sainte-Beuve to André Dupin (1783-1865), dated 17 June 1856, 1 p. in-8, whom he thanks for sending a volume of his memoirs.
