STEVENSON (Robert Louis). Treasure Island. Paris, Hetzel, 1885. In-12, stiff boards in embossed iridescent gold leather with "anti-slip plate" motif, corners in embossed iridescent gold calf with "small squares" at the corners set with a stainless steel bar, at the spine two semi-circular fasteners in embossed iridescent white gold calf with "vermiculated" motif, sealed with three ovoid gilt nails, mordoré iridescent calf spine embossed "vermiculé", visible stitching on two strips of iridescent calf silver embossed "petits carrés", cobalt and sky blue suede lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine, gilt half cloth box with silver box title-piece (J. de Gonet, 2018). Original French edition, translated by Paschal Grousset (author of children's books under the pseudonym André Laurie). Treasure Island first appeared in serial form, from October 1881 to January 1882, in the Scottish magazine Young Folks, before being published in volume form in London in 1883. It was then that Edmond Schérer, a critic at Le Temps, brought it to the attention of Pierre-Jules Hetzel, who on his advice acquired exclusive translation rights. The novel first appeared in serial form in Le Temps, then in volume form in 1885 in the Bibliothèque d'éducation et de récréation. Publisher's 36-page catalogue (CI) bound at the end of the volume. Precious original binding by Jean de Gonet designed to evoke a treasure chest. This binding will appear in the fourth volume of the Catalogue raisonné des reliures de Jean de Gonet, compiled by Fabienne Le Bars (forthcoming). Tear without loss in the margin of the title, break repaired on p. 285, cover lined with thin japon (small loss on the spine), rare scattered foxing.
