Oppenheim, Jacob Köbel, 1518. 2 parts in one folio volume, cold-stamped saddle-skin, quadruple framed with roulettes and fillets, spine decorated with fillets (Modern pastiche binding). A very rare first edition, sumptuously printed in Oppenheim by Jacob Köbel, the second part of which features superb typography in red and black. The extensive woodcut iconography includes a framed title with coats of arms, a porticoed frame around the dedication to Emperor Maximilian I, a full-page anatomical man and numerous tables, diagrams and figures in the text, representing the zodiacs and the labours of the year, the phases of the moon, cities and battles, as well as four full-page figures of intruments and astrolabes printed on strong paper at the end of the volume. This important work was one of those used to design the current Gregorian calendar, promulgated in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII and adopted by France at the end of the same year. Two joint leaves, shorter in margin, are brought back in the first part (ff. 5 and 10); discreet marginal repairs to a few leaves, including the title where a few lines of the frame have been redone by hand; booklet A (Abacus) has been bound after booklet E in the second part; stains, foxing and small scattered wet spots.
