Lot no. 1072
"STOLLENSCHRANK" OR SACRISTY CABINET In the Gothic style, probably by a Munich master craftsmen ca. 1900. Based on a model in the Bavarian National Museum, Nuremberg, last quarter of the 15th century. Softwood in ash veneer and inlaid with ash, partly polychrome painted and carved, and partly gilt. Rectangular body with upper and lower section on a straight frame and block feet. Wide straight cornice. Upper section with double-door above a row of three drawers, lower section likewise with double door. Rich decoration featuring colored reserves with openwork carving, Gothic tendrils and flowers. The side panels feature carved foliage and decorative carrying handles. Beautiful forged iron fittings in the form of coats of arms, with handles attached to deer heads. 2 keys. 188 × 60 × 246 cm. 1 drawer knob broken. Missing parts and signs of wear. The two-story cabinet on offer is an almost exact replica of a late Gothic sacristy cabinet, which is said to have been made in Nuremberg in the last quarter of the 15th century. The original is now in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich (inv. no. MA 2904). The name “sacristy cabinet” dates back to the 19th century and derives from its use for storing church textiles. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg also has a cabinet of identical design but with different ornamentation, which probably originated in Sterzing (South Tyrol) and was also made in the late 15th century (Heinrich Kreisel: Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels. Munich 1968, vol. 1, No. 101). Heinrich Kreisel suspects that this type of cabinet originated in Tyrol, highlighting the openwork, colored tracery as a distinctive feature. Another copy of the cabinet in the Bavarian National Museum was offered for sale in the Hohenzollern department store in Berlin around 1900. It differs from its model and the piece on offer mainly in the design of the door fittings. According to verbal information from the curator at the Bavarian National Museum, three replicas of the original are known to have been made by a Munich master carpenter at the beginning of the 20th century. The original was purchased by the museum in 1857 from the Max Ainmiller collection. Other comparable replicas of Gothic two-story cabinets were offered at Sotheby's Amsterdam, auction 16/17 October 2001, No. 776, and at Hampel Munich, auction 27 March 2014, No. 374. * The full tax is charged on this item marked *, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum will be refunded to Purchasers providing a validly stamped export declaration.
