Lot no. 54
STRABON. Geographicorum lib. XVII. Basel, Johann Walder, 1539. In-folio, stamped saddle-skin on bevelled wooden boards, triple framing of cold roulettes and fillets, cold fleurons in the centre, four-ribbed spine, metal clasps (Germanic binding of the period). A sumptuous Basel edition of the most important treatise on ancient geography, based by Conrad Heresbach on the Latin translation by the Italian humanists Gregorio Tifernate and Guarino de Verona. It is preceded by the Epitome of the Seventeen Books of Strabo's Geography by Hieronymus Gemuseus (Gschmus), a Mulhouse-born physician and philologist, which appears here for the first time. The text is printed in Roman script, with a few passages in Greek, and is adorned with attractive engraved lettering, a fine Basel-style frame to the title, three columns of putti in the list of authors cited by Strabo and the printer's mark to the title and verso of the last leaf, all wood-engraved. A very fine copy in a well-preserved Germanic stamped saddle-skin binding complete with its two clasps. Handwritten ex-dono to title partly crossed out.
