Marbled boards (heavily rubbed and bumped, joints partly broken or cracked, damaged capitals, missing parts of boards, rear cover of vol. 3 loose). Rare first edition. - Nissen ZBI, 175 - Sabin, 2541 - Félix de Azara (1746-1821) is considered "the first scholarly explorer of the La Plata countries, who offered an account based on sources from which all later historians of the La Plata countries have drawn" (Henze I, 123 f). The works are the result of his twenty-year stay in South America. - The plate volume contains, among other things, a beautiful double-page view of Buenos Aires, 1 large map of South America and 4 large detailed maps of Paraguay, Uruguay (the bay of Montevideo with a bird's-eye view of the city) and the then province of Buenos Aires. There are also 11 copper engravings with mammals and birds. - Partly with ink annotations and folded page corners. Foxing. Margins browned. Some plates in the plate volume with tears and marginal tears. Engravings in fine lines and richly detailed maps, some border-coloured. Overall well-preserved copies.
