HPgmt. with RTit., covers covered with paste paper, red edges on three sides. First German edition of the account of Byron's circumnavigation, with an additional description of Patagonia. - Sabin, J. Dictionary of books relating to America from its discovery to the present time, vol. III, 9736 - Report on the voyage of the navigator John Byron, the grandfather of the poet Lord Byron, via the coasts of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, as well as the passage of the Strait of Magellan. After reaching the Pacific, Byron was shipwrecked near Chiloe and was a prisoner of the Spanish in Chile for three years until he escaped in 1744 and returned to his homeland. The account of Byron's expedition, first published anonymously in 1767, has been repeatedly attributed to Charles Clerke. - The present German edition in the translation by C. H. Korn also includes a comprehensive description of the Patagonian coast compiled "from various credible reports", the "customs and habits of the inhabitants, the natural history of the country, etc." The frontispiece engraved by Tilliard taken from the French edition of 1767. Binding slightly rubbed and slightly stained in a few places, title page and a few other pages slightly fingerstained, otherwise a well-preserved copy in an attractive contemporary binding.
