The plates show insects (especially spiders) and botanical motifs. The natural history exploration of the area documented here was carried out by Adolfo Doering, Pablo G. Lorentz and Gustavo Niederlein, who accompanied General Roca's so-called "desert campaign" of 1879 as a punitive military action against indigenous people. - Provenance: "Geographisches Institut der Universität Berlin" and "Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin", with several stamps and partly with cancellation stamps of these institutions, e.g. on recto endpaper and title page of vol. 1. The covers of the work, originally published in three volumes, are not bound in, nor are the title pages of volumes 2 and 3. 2 and 3 - Binding rubbed in places and with scratches, paper browned in places, overall well-preserved copy of this rare volume. - Only two incomplete copies of this rarest of rarities have been recorded for us at auctions in the last 50 years or so. This lot is taxed.
