Lot no. 2714
South German sculptor (active in the 18th century)
Christ at rest
Carved boxwood. Fully sculpted, artistically outstanding, subtle and finely executed depiction of Christ sitting on a rock, clothed in a cloak and with his hands bound. He is thus depicted here entirely as a human being, rather than as the Son of God. He is depicted in a final moment of contemplation directly before the crucifixion and in a pensive pose with his head bowed and looking to his left. H. 14.8 cm.
Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - part II.
