Lot no. 2715
South German sculptor (active in the 18th century)
St John the Baptist with the Lamb of God
Limewood, carved, painted and gilded. Largely preserved original paint, originally elaborately covered in silver with madder lacquer in the depths (inside of the cloak). Almost fully sculpted, slightly flattened, small statuette of John the Baptist in a strong contrapposto, clad in a fur robe under his golden cloak as an attribute, holding the Lamb of God as a symbol of Jesus Christ in his left hand and a shepherd's crook in his right hand. Exceptionally finely carved, beautiful sculpture in detail, the expressive head with subtly modelled shoulder-length hair and full beard particularly outstanding. H. 24 cm.
