Lot no. 2728
South German Baroque carver (active around 1750) Relief panel of St George slaying a dragon Carved lime wood. Landscape panel joined together from two panels. St George on his horse in almost full-round carved plasticity turning towards the dragon below him on the left, his face distorted as he thrusts the lance in his right hand into the monster's throat. His left hand firmly grips the reins of the horse as it turns away. The famous scene from the saint's life is framed by a masterfully carved deciduous tree on the one side, which has been deeply cut and thus moved into the foreground, and an opening cave or walled passageway from which the dragon emerges on the other side. Behind it on a hill is a castle with a kneeling, praying figure in front of it. The style and composition point to a circle around Johann Peter Schwanthaler (1720 Ried - 1795 ibid.). The extremely detailed depiction of the landscape can also be found in the ivory reliefs by Giovanni Battista Pozzo (c. 1670-1752), for example the "Judgement of Paris" in the Green Vault in Dresden (inv. no. VII 139). Surface cleaned. 32 cm x 44.5 cm. Probably original frame. Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - Part II. South German sculptor active around 1750. Deep carved limewood relief panel of Saint George and the dragon. Surface cleaned. Probably original frame.
