South German carver (active in the 18th century) Christ at rest Carved boxwood(?), base and column probably fruitwood or walnut. Fully sculpted, artistically outstanding, subtle and finely executed depiction of Christ seated on a stone block next to a symbolically broken column, clothed in a cloak and wearing a crown of thorns on his head. Christ is depicted less as the Son of God and more as a human being in a final moment of contemplation directly before the crucifixion and in a pensive pose, holding himself with the left hand of the supported arm.
