Lot no. 2825
South German ivory carver (active in the 19th century)
Large, rare ivory mask of a satyr in the neo-baroque style
Ivory, carved in relief. The back trimmed with leather. Skilfully and precisely carved ivory work. The satyr's slanted eyes, bushy hair, flattened nose and open mouth with teeth in relief lend it a somewhat ecstatic and obscene quality. This corresponds to its animalistic character of man and goat. Satyr masks have symbolised the art of acting since ancient Greece and found their way into painting from the Renaissance onwards, where they allude to comedy. The satyr head made of ivory by the Munich sculptor Christoph Angermair from the early 17th century, which he created for the chamber gallery of Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria, was probably the model. 32 cm x 24 cm x 7.2 cm.
