Lot no. 2724
South German Baroque ivory carver (active in the 1st quarter of the 18th century)
Standing crucifix with Corpus Christi, Lamentation of Christ and putti
Walnut and ivory, finely carved. Very finely executed, fully sculpted depiction of the crucified Christ in the four-nail type as "christo vivo", the arms stretched steeply upwards, the feet crossed over each other. The bearded head is tilted upwards towards the right shoulder with a pained expression. The carver has masterfully reproduced the body of Christ with anatomical fidelity, including the musculature and the protruding veins. The loincloth is skilfully tied with a rope and billows out to the right side of Christ. At the top of the cross is an ivory inscription plaque "INRI". On the articulated base, the ivory skull of Adam with a lizard as a vanitas symbol and a symbol of devotion to Jesus Christ; below, two opposing, curved ivory reliefs with mourning putti resting on skulls against an acanthus vine background. The main part of the plinth with further ivory elements: a panel inset on the front with the Lamentation of Christ by Mary and John, each of the bevelled corners with an angel's head with wings pulled far down and rose petals. Corpus Christi approx. 28 cm x 17 cm; total height 70.5 cm.
