Lot no. 74
SUE (Eugène). Le Juif errant. Paris, Paulin, 1844-1845. 10 volumes in-8, half plum basane, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (Binding of the period). A very rare first edition, of which no large paper copies were made. It was through the model of the serial novel, inspired by Charles Dickens, that Eugène Sue sublimated his art of storytelling with multiple interwoven plots, combined with an accurate portrait of contemporary society through vast human frescoes. Le Juif errant appeared in Le Constitutionnel between 25 June 1844 and 26 August 1845, before being published in bookshops in 1844-1845. It was one of the greatest publishing successes of the century, with no fewer than twenty-six editions and seven known translations. A choice copy bound in ten volumes at the time, a rare and desirable condition for a work that is difficult to find in good condition. The titles bear no mention of edition. Minor foxing, small halos in the margins of a few leaves. Svane, Sue, 26 - Vicaire, VII, 686 - Carteret, II, 374 - Clouzot, 260.
