A set of ten Neoclassical style patinated beechwood chairs, attributed to Maison Jansen, the velvet upholstery attributed to Maison Decour.
This set of chairs is similar to those sold at the Manolo March Collection sale (Christie's London, 29 October 2009, lots 66 to 68). These seem to correspond to the set supplied by Jansen for the wedding of Marita March and Alfonso Fierro Jiménez-Lopera on 27 June 1970.
In his book Jansen, published in New York in 2006, James Archer Abbott wrote: "Jansen draped the rooms and walls of the garden of the Palacio March with what seemed like endless draperies [...] The round tables were covered in blue silk, a shade lighter than the walls. Around the tables were chairs of a classic Jansen design: Louis XIV style, with a curved base and covered in blue velvet. The same model was used a year later for the great celebration of the Shah of Iran in Persepolis.
A similar suite of chairs could be found in the dining room of Madame Jacqueline Delubac's Paris flat (see E. Evans Eerdmans, Henri Samuel: Master of the French Classic Interior, Rizzoli, New York, p. 130).
Pierre Arizzoli Clémentel, in the book he dedicated to the great decorator Georges Geoffroy, tells us that Geoffroy used this model of chair for the great Chilean tycoon and art collector Arturo Lopez-Willshaw (1900-1962). A key figure in the post-war 'Café Society', he used these chairs in his private mansion in Neuilly, at the Hôtel Lambert, his Parisian residence on the Île Saint-Louis, and aboard the Gaviota, the luxury yacht he had fitted out in the early 1950s.
Among the rare sets that have appeared on the market in recent years are the suite of sixteen chairs sold at Christie's Paris on 23 April 2013, lot 594, and the series of eight from a Paris pied-à-terre decorated by Hubert de Givenchy, sold at Christie's Paris on 14 September 2021, lot 67.
