SUPERB ROMAN SILVER-GILT LEGIONARY APPLIQUÉ INSCRIBED ‘UTERE FELIX’.

A VERY RARE silver-gilt appliqué of shield-shaped outline with a rectangular upper panel decorated with an applied gilt frieze of triangles filled with punched pellets. Below, the cut-away shoulders are set with confronting bird-head ornaments. The main field centres on an applied gilt roundel with a pellet-filled eight-pointed star around a raised boss, encircled by the inscription 'UTERE FELIX' (Use (this) happily).

Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1990s.
