Lot no. 103
A superb 19th century necklace in the Antique Revival style, made of approx. 20k (847 thousandths) yellow gold and comprising rosette-decorated chains fixed to a main chain adorned with tubular pearls, from which hang hollow tassels and female figures resembling Astarte. In the centre is a male figure that is a combination of the head of Acheloos, an Etruscan jewel in the Louvre, and a head of the Egyptian god Bes. The faces, tassels and palmettes underneath are hollow and made either by repoussé or stamping. Gold analysis: 84.76%; Ag 13.43%; Cu 0.74%; composition known from the study commissioned from the Aurum Antiquum appraisal firm under the direction of Drs. Besson and Thiaudière, who produced a full expert report on 5 November 2012. Missing granulation, dents, a detached chain in one place, traces of wear and more modern repairs, we really wanted to make people think that this jewel had come out of the ground by an experienced archaeologist by putting a few traces of soil on the object. Although it is not signed by Castellani or one of his contemporaries, this jewel is a true marvel of assimilation of ancient cultures and attempts to reproduce the jewellery techniques of the time. Height of the Acheloos/Bès head: 2.1 cm. Length: 58 cm. Gross weight: 61.1 g.
