[SWEBACH] - [ENGELMANN]. [French Army]. [1812-1832]. In-folio bound in half dark green long-grained morocco, gilt Napoleon's cipher at the tail of the spine (later binding). Adorned with 12 lithographed plates in colour, all marked on the verso with the collector's mark A.M. Charming and unusual collection of this suite of military costumes of the French army under the reign of Louis-Philippe by E. Swebach lithographed by Engelmann.
Our copy comes from the collection of Albert Millot (1792-1865), a former cuirassier brigadier who was renowned for his vast collection of prints of 19th-century French and European military costumes. Comprising thousands of lithographs and engravings, this vast and authoritative collection included works covering the Napoleonic Empire, the Restoration and the reign of Louis-Philippe, documenting the evolution of 19th-century armies and clothing strategies. This precious collection remained in the Millot family for the first few years after his death, before being sold at public auction in 1904.
Good condition, with some foxing and slightly oxidised paper.
Provenance: Collection Albert Millot, Sale collection A. M***, military costumes, Paris, Hôtel des commissaires-Priseurs, 5-6 et 7 May 1904, n°174, Collection Princesse Marie-Clotilde Bonaparte, Comtesse de Witt, which has remained in the family to this day.
