A MOUNTED SHOWER PORCELAIN SNUFF BOX, CIRCA 1760; SLIGHTLY WORN, FEW DEFECTS
Snuff boxes decorated with purple monochrome landscapes are usually attributed to Giuseppe Romei (active in the manufactory until the 1950s) and his collaborators. These were years in which the production of galanterie was important at Doccia, to the point that, as Ginori Lisci recalls in 1963 (L. Ginori Lisci, La porcellana di Doccia, Milan 1963, p. 52), a special silversmiths' workshop was set up to provide the mounts. Ginori Lisci also reports the citation of snuffboxes 'called quadre dipinte' perhaps relating to the model of ours (ibid., p. 308). Lastly, Biancalana (op. cit., 2009, p. 173) recalls how Jacopo Fanciullacci wrote to Lorenzo Ginori in 1760 speaking of a 'snuffbox with small purple-coloured squares ordered at the head of the house with its silver hinge'.
