Lot no. 481
Snuffbox
Carved from boxwood and polychromed. It takes the form of a gentleman wearing a long coat with a large, turned-up collar, from which his face emerges, his features imbued with a genuinely caricatured good-naturedness. Dressed in a suit and with his hands in his pockets, he stands upright. The background is painted black, as are the hair and eyebrows. The eyes are made of seed beads. There is a concealed trapdoor opening at the back.
19th century
H. 9.2 cm
Feet missing but stands perfectly upright
