Orientalist circular table and chair Probably Maison Krieger, Paris or Cairo, circa 1920-30 Turned wood salon furniture painted in predominantly red and black polychrome and gilded, comprising a table with a circular top highlighted by a scalloped apron, four baluster legs and curved at the base, held by a strut topped by an Ottoman crescent. The chair has an oval back supported by two fluted uprights ending in a ball. The underside of the seat is also scalloped and painted in polychrome. Wear and tear. Table: H. 75 cm - D. 94 cm Chairs: H. 101 cm - W. 57 cm LS The Krieger company, founded in Paris in 1826 by Antoine Krieger, was an important manufacturer of quality style furniture. It was taken over at the end of the 19th century by Antoine Krieger's son-in-law and changed its name. It continued to produce stylish furniture and in the 1920s and 1930s employed up to 1,000 people in its workshops in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. It also set up a branch in Cairo. Orientalist furniture in a similar Ottoman style graced the Palais Sursock in Beirut.
