Oval mahogany centre table with rich ormolu ornamentation, the uprights resting on an openwork brace and four swivel feet. The belt is centred on a medallion of a woman, with friezes of roses, pearls and moulded fillets. Triglyph foliate clasps, friezes of heart-shaped stripes and large garlands of garlanded flowers crown the tapering jambs adorned with knotted flower falls. A covered shuttle balances the centre. Biography : Alfred-Emmanuel Beurdeley (1847-1919), was in 1875, the collaborator, then the successor of his father, Louis-Auguste Beurdeley, one of the main cabinet-makers of the Second Empire, making mainly 18th century style furniture and designated as the "star" of exhibitions and the "favourite of the royal and imperial families". Although Alfred produced the same kind of work as his father, he also distinguished himself not only as an outstanding bronzemaker but also as one of the most famous art collectors. He was a brilliant participant in the 1878 Universal Exhibition, where he won the gold medal alongside the most famous artists of the day, including Dasson, Grohé, Sauvresy and Fourdinois. Crowned with glory, he even opened a branch in New York. In 1883, Alfred Beurdeley, fabricant de bronzes d'art, was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur following his highly acclaimed participation in the Universal Exhibition in Amsterdam, and was hailed by both the government and contemporary critics. His last major exhibition was the Exposition Universelle et Internationale of 1889, where the director did not hesitate to state in his report that "Mr Beurdeley's talent is self-evident from the mere inspection of his furniture".
