Lot no. 201
TABLEAUX HISTORIQUES DE LA REVOLUTION FRANCAISE (Collection complète des). Paris, Pierre Didot, 1798. 3 volumes large in-folio, basane racinée, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (Binding of the period). Second edition of this splendid publication offering an accurate and lively pictorial history of the French Revolution. It comprises 113 issues in 3 volumes, with texts by Abbé Fauchet, Champfort, Guinguené and Pagès. The first volume and half of the second had been published when the revolutionary turmoil forced the editors to modify the layout of the work and change some of the texts to bring them into line with the demands of the new political tendencies, in a less revolutionary and above all anti-orleanist direction, with new notes written by François-Xavier Pagès de Vixouse (1745-1802). The work went through five editions between 1791 and 1817. The illustration consists of 215 intaglio plates, including 3 frontispieces by Fragonard fils engraved by Malapeau and Copia, 153 plates drawn by Delvaux, Duplessi-Bertaux, Fragonard fils, Ozanne, Prieur, etc., and 60 fine medallion portraits engraved by Levachez after Chinard, Gérard and Mme Vigée-Lebrun, at the bottom of which are charming vignettes by Duplessi-Bertaux. Elegant contemporary bindings, skilfully restored; some scattered foxing and light spotting. Cohen, 969-971.
