[TACHARD (Guy). Voyage de Siam des Pères Jésuites envoyés par le Roy aux Indes et à la Chine. Paris, Arnould Seneuze and Daniel Horthemels, 1686. In-4°, 8 ff. n. b. including title, 424 p. 4 ff. n.c. of table and errata, brown basane, spine ribbed, decorated and gilt, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition illustrated with 20 plates out of text, including 10 double-page plates, 7 large vignettes at the head of chapters, lettering and lamp-ends engraved by Vermeulen after Sevin. Father Tachard (1651-1712) made two trips to Siam, one in 1685-1686, the other in 1687-1689, with a delegation of Jesuit missionaries. His accounts provide valuable information on Siam, Cochinchina and Tonkin, Indonesia (Java, Sumatra, Bantam, Batavia) and the reception of the Jesuits by the Dutch at the Cape of Good Hope. Father Tachard's account of the Second Voyage was published in 1689. Binding worn, headpieces missing, two hinges cracked, rubbing, corners dull, marginal light stain on first and last leaves, otherwise in good condition.
