Lot no. 1939
Carpet, Caucasus, mid-20th century, with central medallion set in a hexagon on a beige ground, border decorated with various medallions, 178x280 cm Provenance: Charlie and Oona Chaplin, then by descent Oona and Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was one of the most emblematic figures in the history of cinema. His meteoric rise took him from London to the United States thanks to his star character, Charlie Chaplin (The Tramp). His fourth wife, Oona Chaplin (1925-1991), was the daughter of Eugene O'Neill, the famous American playwright and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. A young actress and New York socialite, Oona briefly embarked on a career in Hollywood, where she crossed paths with the film legend. Seduced by her beauty and charisma, Charlie Chaplin began a relationship with her that quickly developed into a love affair. In 1943, at the age of 18, Oona married Chaplin, then 54. Despite criticism and disapproval from some close friends, their marriage was a happy one and they had eight children. Oona ended her public career to devote herself entirely to her family, supporting Charlie in his final years and bringing up their children at Manoir de Ban, their home in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland. Oona leaves behind a singular legacy: muse, mother and true matriarch of the Chaplin dynasty. She was undoubtedly the First Lady of one of the greatest names in cinema. Carpet, Caucasus, 1st half 20th century This rug is considered one of Charlie Chaplin's favourites, having taken pride of place in the bedroom he shared with Oona in their family home in California. When the Chaplins left the United States in 1952 to settle at the Manoir du Ban in Vevey, Switzerland, they took it with them.
