Carpet from the PETAG factory, Tabriz, Iran, 1st third of the 20th century, with ochre central field decorated with large polychrome flowers and leaves, yellow border decorated with flowers and stylised foliage, signed, 237x331 cm.
PETAG (Persische Teppiche Aktien Gesellschaft), a German company, was founded in Berlin in 1911. The workshop, based in the city of Tabriz, aimed to produce carpets of the highest quality in order to combat mass production at the end of the 19th century. PETAG carpets are distinguished by their use of Safavid motifs, particularly lustrous kork wool, natural vegetable dyes and its distinctive çintamani signature, consisting of three circles arranged in a triangle.
