Wide-margined, uncut copy of Lormian's translation of Tasso's masterpiece, elegantly illustrated with plates drawn by Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790). This was the copy of Leon Laurent-Pichat, politician and director of the Revue de Paris, the first editor of Gustave Flaubert's celebrated Madame Bovary.
Folio, 2 volumes, (325 × 255mm). Frontispiece and 40 plates after Cochin, engraved by Taillard, Dambrun, Lingée, Ponce, Prévost, Delignon, Trière, Varin, and Simonet; untrimmed (some foxing). Contemporary red morocco-backed boards, preserved in a later slipcase (slight wear). Provenance: Leon Laurent-Pichat (1823-1886), ownership stamp to endpapers. (2)
