Lot no. 538
POLYCHROME PORCELAIN CUP, GINORI SHOWER MANUFACTURE, 1753 low and decorated with cardinal's heraldic coat of arms; little wear, minor restoration to the rim with felting H. cm 4.9, diam. cm 7.6 A SHOWER PORCELAIN CUP, 1753; SLIGHTLY WORN, A MINOR RESTORATION, A RIM FELURE Our cup is part of the well-known service made in Doccia for the Milanese prelate Gianfranco Stoppani (1695-1774) who was elevated to the purple in 1753 and was already nuncio in Tuscany from 1735 to 1739. Correspondence between Stoppani and Carlo Ginori shows that the former had already received porcelain from the factory in 1752, which would be followed by that adorned with the cardinal's hat following his appointment in December 1753 (but probably already ready in the previous months: Ginori Lisci, op. cit., pp. 49-50). Few pieces of the service are known (including the coffee pot now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inv. C.51 &A-1931) and a few cups: one of these was on the English antiquarian market in 2021. But look also at d'Agliano in 2005 (d'Agliano, op. cit. 2005, cat. 115, p. 290) and in 2013 (Porcellane italiane dalla collezione Lokar, Milan 2013, card 87, p. 185, also for a list of known examples of the service).
