Ivory devotional case Southern Italy, 19th century wood and ivory A devotional composition in carved, engraved and pierced elephant ivory, with architectural and ornamental elements in inlaid wood, inside a coeval wood and glass case. The structure presents at its centre the finely carved figure of the crucified Christ, characterised by an accurate anatomical rendering and a soft modelling, typical of 19th-century devotional production. Around the crucifix are arranged, according to a scenographic construction of theatrical taste, the instruments of the Passion, including the lance, the ladder, the scourging column, the chalice, the rooster, the shroud and other symbols of the Christological iconographic tradition. The composition is part of the 19th-century private devotional production of southern Italy, characterised by the combined use of ivory and polychrome wooden inlays and architectural layouts of late Baroque and Neo-Classical origin, elements confirmed by the quality and precision of the carving and micro-sculpture.On the back there is a cartouche with a relic authentication dated April 1856, issued by the Archbishop of Florence Ferdinando Minucci under the pontificate of Pius IX, certifying the devotional destination of the object and its circulation in ecclesiastical circles.Lot accompanied by CITES documentation.
