At a very young age, de Nicola moved from Musellaro, a hamlet of Bolognano in the province of Pescara, to Naples to begin his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he specialised in figure painting. He studied with Michele Cammarano, so much so that he became his favourite pupil, then with Vincenzo Volpe and Paolo Vetri
