Colourful "Victoria" decoration of peony branches and butterflies as well as the "Rothschild bird" pattern of naturalistic pairs of birds sitting on branches on the wall and in the mirror. Polychrome painting with overprint. Gold staffage. Partially minimally rubbed/broken; maker's mark. Fish plate l. 61 cm. The "Victoria" decoration, which is influenced by East Asian models with its fine peony blossom motifs, was first shown with great success at the London World Exhibition in 1851. Queen Victoria ordered a dinner service with this motif design for Windsor Castle. The "Rothschild bird" decoration was originally made for the Rothschild banking family in the 1850s.
