Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 120,000 Euro Paula Modersohn-Becker´s paintings feature an outstanding recognition value, like no other artist of early Expressionism. Despite the rather short productive period – she died at the young age of 31 – the artist left approximately 750 paintings, 1000 drawings and some rare printed graphics behind. She specialized on children portraits and illustrations and found inspiration in museums and in the work of her drawing masters. During the time spent in the artists´ colony in Worpswede, Paula Modersohn-Becker neglects portraiture in favor of landscapes; this is also the time in which she made this painting. She was deeply impressed by the surroundings of Worpswede and this impact reflects in the play of color, in the calm, in the loneliness and in the nativeness inspired by the environment. Birches are the trade mark of her paintings: in one of her diary entries she compared birches to delicate, slender virgins as in strong contrast to pine trees, which in her eyes, were the male counterparts. Condition: The painting is in very good condition. There are no visible marks under UV light. The images dimensions are 55.5. cm x 41.2 cm. The frame shows minor signs of usage and measures 71.5 x 57.5 cm. Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) Throughout her short life, Paula Modersohn-Becker produced several groundbreaking and intensive works. She trained as a painter and draughtswoman in a private Berlin school and attended the artists´ colony in Worpswede, where she was mentored by the painter Fritz Mackensen. In the colony the artist met her husband-to-be, the landscape painter Otto Modersohn. Her work firstly concentrated on impressionistic landscape painting. After a study visit to Paris, her artistic production converged towards the manner of Paul Cézanne increasingly focusing on portraiture. Paula Modersohn-Becker is considered a pioneer of the modern era. Works by Paula Modersohn-Becker are in the collections of major international art museums, such as the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, the Kunsthalle Bremen, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the Harvard University Art Museum.
