A duplicate certificate of authenticity from Mr Robert Finck, expert, dated 14 October 1964, stating that the work came from the collection of Lord Ashburnham, will be given to the buyer.
David Teniers the Younger dealt on at least three occasions with the theme of the hurdy-gurdy player, one of his favourite types of musician along with the piper, the flutist and the mandolin player.
In the version in the former Victor Decock collection, he depicted the old musician full-length and facing (Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 12 May 1948, no. 82); in the version in the Georges Ryaux collection (wood; 16.7 x 10.5 cm), he turned slightly to his left (Paris, Palais d'Orsay, 4 October 1979; then Galerie Jean - Max Tassel, Maastricht 1990).
Finally, near a woman with a brazier, in front of a village palisade, in a size similar to the one reproduced here (wood; 36 x 29 cm), signed like the previous two (Sotheby's London 17 May 1989, no. 3).
