Bird embroidered hanging, Canton workshops, China, circa 1880, Redcurrant silk satin brightly embroidered with polychrome silk in shaded pastel, flat pastel and oriental stitch. The design features a lakeside landscape with a gnarled flowering tree and a multitude of birds, including ducks, peacocks, pheasants, birds of prey and waders. Peony garlands embroidered in gold on satin. Lined with taffeta (some parts fused), 375 x 180 cm.
