Lot no. 211
TERRET (Régis). Around Mont Blanc and Mont Rose. 1870 holidays. Villefranche-sur-Saône, 1873. In-8°, half-bound with corners (contemporary binding). Autographed first edition, very rare. An account of the journey made by a class from the Collège de Notre-Dame de Mongré through Savoie, the Valais and Italy: the caravan reached Savoie, travelled up the Tarentaise and crossed the Seigne pass, the Grand Saint-Bernard pass and the difficult Belle-Combe pass. It then visited the Viège valley and crossed the Théodule pass (a reminder of the first ascent of the Matterhorn). The rest of the journey took in Italy as far as Milan. The programme for this trip had to be adapted to take account of the conflict between France and Germany. Régis Terret (Lyon 1824 - Marseille 1878) was a French Jesuit, teacher and Prefect of Studies at the Lycée Notre-Dame de Mongré in Villefranche-sur-Saône. Following the example of Töpffer, he organised trips with his pupils to Switzerland and Lombardy in the summer of 1862; he repeated the experience in the Tyrol and Veneto the following year, in Spain in 1865, then again in the Tyrol and Bavaria, via the Grisons, in 1867. He made further excursions around Mont-Blanc and Mont-Rose in 1870 and to Austria, via Mont-Viso, in 1872. Perret, 4233-B
