Bronze Shakyamuni Buddha head, Thailand, 15th-16th century, Chiang Saen style.
Bronze with a brown-green patina, with remains of gilding. The left eye retains remnants of white paint, a rare feature. Meditatively modelled face, arched eyebrows, formerly inlaid eyes, aquiline nose, finely smiling lips, stretched lobes, curly hair dominated by a ushnisha. The whole is characteristic of the Chieng Sen style, which emerged in northern Thailand, influenced by Lanna art and Mon-Khmer traditions.
Condition: Good original condition, no repairs, missing left earlobe. Even patina and wear consistent with age.
