Lot no. 329
HEAD OF A LYING MAN
Large female head of a recumbent in sculpted
white marble. The peaceful face has closed
closed eyes, the mouth sketching a smile
of bliss. She is wearing her hair in a ratepenade
(like a snowshoe). There is a collar around her neck.
On the back is a wrought iron tenon.
France, 16th century, circa 1560.
Height: 25 cm - Width: 27.5 cm
Depth: 16 cm
(Fragment, visible missing parts)
This noble lady's headdress is entirely
characteristic of the high nobility as it was
during the reign of Kings Charles IX and
Henry III. The quality of the marble used
expensive material and the prerogative of the great of the kingdom
allows us to envisage an important patron
with a certain degree of certainty.
