Lot no. 84
Thanos TSINGOS (1914-1965), "Abstract composition", oil on canvas, signed on the back, H: 38 cm, W: 46 cm Born in Eleusis, Greece, in 1914 and died in Athens in 1965, Thanos Tsingos was a Greek painter associated with tachism and informal art. Trained as an architect, he helped to build the city of Brasilia after the war. When he moved to Paris in 1953, he created theatre sets before devoting himself entirely to painting. He painted using his hands, knives or by pressing a tube of paint directly onto the canvas. Tsingos's works, often painted with violence, straddle the line between figuration and abstraction, as illustrated by his series The Flowers. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Athens in 1965 and at the Centre Pompidou in 1980.
