Lot no. 646
Thaulow, Frits 1847 Christiana - 1906 Volendam Bachlauf im Winter. Öl auf Leinwand. 61 x 81cm. Signiert unten links: Frits Thaulow. Rahmen. Originale Öl Leinwand Landschaft, Winter THAULOW, FRITS (1847 Christiana - 1906 Volendam) Stream in winter. Oil on canvas. 61 x 81cm. Signed lower left: Frits Thaulow. Framed. A Norwegian, who lived and worked in France for many years and always pushed the limits, Frits Thaulow's oeuvre is characterised by naturalistic landscapes, more often than not covered in snow. Early on in his career, just after his studies in Copenhagen and Karlsruhe, he met increasing approval in the Danish artists' colony of Skagen during the 1870s. There French plein air painting and the Barbizon school were of particular interest. This understanding of art he would later institute in his homeland. Toward the end of the decade Thaulow made his way to Paris. Deeply impressed by French painting, Frits Thaulow would later (in 1883) found the 'Open Air Academy' in Norway, where he was regarded as paving the way for a form of naturalism that was opposed to traditional academic art. In terms of subject Thaulow accomplished the connection of Impressionist landscape painting and Scandinavian snowscapes. Throughout his life he was inspired by French Impressionism. In 1892 he returned to France for good. Until his death he created several of the famous landscape paintings in the area of Dieppe, which gaind him the celebrated approval of international art exhibitions and salons.
