"THE CULLINAN
commemorative work by joseph asscher & co.
A series of fifteen photographs retracing the steps involved in cutting "The Cullinan" diamond.
A rare and precious work (one of which is held by the Gemological Institute of America and another by Indiana University), the Cullinan was originally a rough diamond weighing more than 3,106 carats, and is the witness and guardian of memories of an extraordinary discovery of a gift of nature. Of exceptional quality, this gem-quality diamond has aroused curiosity and admiration ever since its discovery. Presented to the British Crown on the occasion of King Edward VII's birthday, it was cut and polished by Mr Joseph Asscher and his talented craftsmen in his workshops in Amsterdam. From the rough, nine main diamonds were extracted, which now adorn the jewels of the British Crown.
