Few individual cars can claim to be truly iconic, but this is one of them. Both the car and its famous first owner were perfect examples of Italian style at its most elegant. Pictured together in books and magazines since their 1960s heyday, this is the actual Lancia Flaminia SuperSport Zagato originally owned by Italian heartthrob and internationally acclaimed leading man Marcello Mastroianni.
“The premier Italian actor of the post-war era, Marcello Mastroianni was among the most popular international stars in movie history” remarks Jason Ankeny of All Movie Guide. Following his early acting days in the late 1940s, he hit the big time starring in Federico Fellini's 1960 masterpiece La Dolce Vita, an exposé of Rome's wealthy socialites and partygoers. By 1964, Mastroianni's legendary screen partnership with Sophia Loren had further consolidated his status.
One can imagine the public excitement, therefore, when Mastroianni arrived at the 1964 Turin Motor Show to tour the latest exhibits and was captivated by the brand new, mid blue SuperSport Zagato on Lancia's stand. Elio Zagato himself later recalled: “It was 4th November and the car had been finished at the last minute, so we hadn't even had time to fit the script identifying the model on the rear or the bonnet bulge. The car was a medium blue, very fashionable at the time,” but apparently Mastroianni did not care for the colour and requested that Zagato repaint it a dark chestnut brown after the show. “When we built the car” continues Zagato, “I wanted to fit wooden knobs, a detail we didn't continue on any others. I remember when Mastroianni came to collect the car from our firm. He arrived alone and was very polite…a real gentleman who was enthusiastic about his new car.”
Fast forward several years, and the Zagato came to light in the ownership of an antique dealer in Rome, from whom Silvano Cima purchased it circa 1987. He recalls: “It was silver and the seller was proud that it had been the famous actor's. When I entrusted the car to restorer KCA underneath the silver paint they found brown and under that Mendoza blue, the original colour of the car at the Turin Show.”
This famous car has been the subject of many articles and a frequent participant in regularity events (including the Winter Marathon before restoration) where it always placed well. Towards the end of his career, while performing at Milan's Teatro Nuovo, a visibly moved Marcello Mastroianni was able to sit once again at the wheel of his most beloved (and most famous) motor car. Presented in excellent condition throughout, this unique Italian thoroughbred is offered with ASI homologation papers, Italian libretto and a fascinating article which appeared in Ruoteclassiche magazine, March 1997
