Green half-leather bindings of the period, signed J[ohn] Wright, Noel Street [London], each with 2 red spine labels, rich gilt spines, marbled boards and endpapers, and gilt edges (somewhat rubbed and bumped, ends of joints partially cracked, continuing at 2 joints, some repairs to capitals). Stafleu-C. 1286 - Nissen BBI 439 (erroneous collation). - Title edition of the second edition 1817-28. Flora of Great Britain, first published 1775-98, intended to be complete. The first 3 volumes contain the 432 plates of the first edition with revised text by Hooker, the two remaining volumes are completely new. The majority of the added plates and associated descriptions are again by Hooker. The precise life-size illustrations include a number of magnificent mushrooms. - Provenance: bookplate Christopher Turnor (1806-86), Stoke Rochford Library. - Some sporadic foxing, overall a remarkably fresh copy.
