With 2 double-page title pages illuminated in colour and heightened in gold, 4 decorative pages with floral ornamentation in gold and several marginal vignettes. 14 lines in black and red ink. India, mid-16th century. 8° (17 × 10.5 cm). [305] pp. 20th century red marocco binding with blind-stamped scroll ornamentation and centre arabesque (corners somewhat bumped). Modern cloth pouch. Fine nashkî. - Small-format pocket Qur'an from the early period of Mughal rule. - Black ink, the sura headings as well as some highlighting and diacritical marks in red, on a gold-speckled ground throughout, at the beginning and in the middle a very finely executed double page each with a Mauresque border, the second and last double leaf each with a decorative border in gold (at the end also with colours). - Slightly browned, occasional faint dampstaining, somewhat worn at the lower corner (last leaf with small loss), occasional professionally restored wormholes in the margins (without loss of text but with slight loss of image). - Annotations by another hand on endpapers. - Provenance: Hartung & Hartung, Munich, Auction 85 (1997), lot 134 - European private collection.
