With 8 double-page titles on gold ground, some chapter headings and vignettes, all illuminated in gold and colours. 2-3 columns of 18 lines each in black-brown and red ink. Iran, 16th century. 4° (28 × 20 cm). [30]; [157]; [170] vols. New leather bindings with blind-stamped centre arabesques and corner fleurons; restored half leather using old covers, spine rebacked with maroquin (spine and headband renewed; small losses to covers, slightly rubbed and bumped). Elegant nastal'iq. - Unusually beautiful manuscript of the Safavid period with the collected works of Saadi. - Endpapers renewed. Browned, with heavy dampstaining almost throughout, occasional smudging of text, some unattractive backing or pastedowns, some framing lines fragile, some repaired, occasional small marginal tears, restored leaves, some with additions. - Endpapers with numerous (partly new) annotations, partly erased notes and stamps. - Provenance: Hartung & Hartung, Munich, Auction 85 (1997), lot 186 - European private collection.
